Do You Need a Dubai Transit Visa? 48 vs 96 Hours Explained

Most people who search for a Dubai transit visa do not need
one. Whether you do comes down to three things: how long your layover is,
whether you plan to leave the airport, and which passport you hold. This guide
walks through all three so you can stop guessing.

The short answer, in three questions

Work through these in order. The first “no” ends the process.

1. Are you leaving the airport? If you stay airside and connect
   to your onward flight, you need no visa at all. This covers the majority of
   Dubai layovers.
2. Is your layover under eight hours? Realistically there is
   not enough time to clear immigration, travel into the city and return safely.
   Most travellers in this window stay in the terminal.
3. Does your passport already qualify for visa-free entry or a visa on
   arrival? If so, you enter on that, and no transit visa is required.

If you answered yes, yes, and no, then you need a transit visa. That is the
group this guide is written for.

When you do not need a transit visa at all

Three situations catch most people out.

You are staying airside

Dubai International is built for connections. Terminals 1 and 3 are linked
airside, so most passengers change planes without ever passing through
immigration. No immigration, no visa.

Your passport gets visa-free entry or a visa on arrival

A substantial number of nationalities enter the UAE without applying for
anything in advance. If yours is one of them, you simply enter on arrival and
your layover becomes a short visit. Applying for a transit visa on top would be
spending money on something you already have.

Your airline is arranging it

If you are flying Emirates or flydubai and booked a long connection, the
48-hour transit visa is often available as part of the booking, either free or
for a nominal fee. Check with the airline before applying anywhere else. We

48 hours or 96 hours: what actually differs

The two transit visas are not two sizes of the same product. They come from
different places and suit different trips.

The 48-hour transit visa

Normally arranged through the airline you are flying with, as part of your
booking. It is either free or carries a small charge. It covers a short
stopover: a hotel night, a few hours in the city, back to the airport. If your
connection is overnight and you are flying a UAE carrier, ask the airline first.

The 96-hour transit visa

Applied for separately, and it gives four days rather than two. This is the
one for travellers treating the layover as a short trip in its own right, with
enough time for the Marina, a desert morning, and a day in Abu Dhabi without
watching the clock. It is single entry, valid for 30 days from issue, and
cannot be extended.

A practical way to choose:

• Connection under 8 hours. Stay airside and apply for
  nothing.
• Overnight, leaving the next day. Ask your airline about the
  48-hour visa first.
• Two to four days between flights. You need the 96-hour visa.
  The 48-hour one will not stretch to cover it.
• More than four days. A transit visa is the wrong product
  here. A 14 days
  Dubai visit visa gives far more room for not much more money.

Does your nationality change the answer?

Yes, more than any other factor. Eligibility for both transit visas depends on
the passport you hold, and in some cases on residency you hold elsewhere. A
resident of the US, UK or an EU country may be treated differently from someone
holding the same passport without that residency.

There is no single list that stays accurate for long, because the UAE updates
its arrangements regularly. If you are unsure, check your specific passport and
route before booking anything non-refundable. We will tell you which route

What a transit visa does not let you do

Worth knowing before you plan around it:

• No extensions. Neither transit visa can be extended or
  renewed. You must leave the UAE on or before the expiry date.
• No work. Paid work of any kind is not permitted, including
  remote work for an overseas employer while you are in the country.
• One entry only. Leave the UAE and the visa is finished, even
  if time remains on it.
• A shorter window to travel. Transit visas are valid for 30
  days from issue, against 60 for standard tourist visas. Apply closer to your
  travel date, not months ahead.

If you need the 96-hour visa

Once you have worked through the questions above and the 96-hour visa is the
